June 25, 2009 • AFA Conservatory nearly halfway over!

• On campus this week are the Orchestra/Chamber Music, Piano, Composition, and Intensive Jazz Workshop departments. All are working hard toward their performances this weekend (Orchestra) and next week (Jazz). Next week, the Choral & Vocal Studies department will join the AFA campus.

• Please visit the Concerts page to find out about upcoming performances. Concerts this week inlcude the AFA Faculty & Honors String Quartet recital on Friday, 7pm at Ovations and the AFA Conservatory Orchestra at Moores Opera House on Saturday, 4 pm.

June 9, 2009 • AFA is under way!

• The AFA Middle School String Orchestra and Middle School Choral & Vocal Studies departments are both in full swing this week with about 150 students on campus at Pershing Middle School! These groups will both have performances beginning June 18th.

• AFA's Orchestra/Chamber Music, Piano, and Composition departments will begin Monday, June 15th.

• The 2009 AFA Concert Calendars will be hitting your mailbox soon. For an online guide to dates, venues, and other information, visit our Concert Info page or AFA's page at the Houston Arts Alliance web site ArtsHound. ArtsHound.com is a tremendous resource for all kinds of events in and around the city of Houston.

• If you are attending the 2009 Conservatory, please make sure you have received your Enrollment Forms and that you return the required materials by the deadline on page 1 of your packet.

• Update on transportation to the 2009 Conservatory:

Carpool lists have been sent out;please notify AFA if you have not received one in the mail.

Unfortunately, the proposed transportation from the Klein area to Pershing will not be available in 2009.

If you need a Metro pass, please notify AFA as soon as possible.

May 12, 2009 • Swine Flu and AFA

Some of you may be wondering if the recent swine flu situation will affect AFA this summer. At this time, AFA fully plans to go on with the 2009 Conservatory as planned. Pershing Middle School has not been affected by the virus, and AFA plans to adhere to any CDC recommendations, which currently does not require the closing of schools due to a case of swine flu. Rest assured that the AFA staff is well aware of the virus and will continue to follow any developments.

We are looking forward to the summer and having everyone on campus!

May 1, 2009 • IMPORTANT UPDATE

The following departments are now CLOSED for AFA 2009, meaning no more applications for these departments will be accepted:

• Orchestra/Chamber Music- ALL INSTRUMENTS EXCEPT FRENCH HORN
• Piano
• Composition
• Middle School Choral & Vocal Studies
• Middle School String Orchestra-Violin and Cello
If you were planning on applying for any of these departments, we encourage you to apply for next summer!

The only OPEN (still accepting applications) departments as of May 1 are:
• Middle School Strings Viola & Bass
• Intensive Jazz Workshop
• High School Choral & Vocal Studies
• French Horn (Orchestra/Chamber Music)
IMPORTANT: All current audition dates are now full; you must contact AFA before or after filling out your application for information on when you will audition.

Due to low response, AFA has canceled the audition date for Southeast Texas students this Saturday, April 11 in Beaumont.
