American Festival for the Arts, 2010 Summer Music Conservatory and Concert Series

AFA Collaborations & Community Involvement

AFA maintains a strong community presence throughout the year and believes in involving other groups in AFA activities whenever possible. In addition to the AFA board, faculty and staff serving on numerous boards in Houston and the surrounding area, AFA is committed to working with other organizations both during the Conservatory and throughout the year to expose new audiences to talented young people.

Examples of AFA's community involvement include:

• Local students from Pershing Middle School's summer session and from the Weekley Family YMCA (both housed at Pershing in the summer attended AFA orchestra rehearsals and had opportunities to ask questions of AFA conductors and students.

• AFA held a special piano master class in Beaumont, TX for young pianists from throughout Southeast Texas.

• AFA jazz students and faculty performed a special concert at Methodist Hospital as part of the Center for the Performing Arts Medicine's "Rush Hour" concert series.

• Choral students from KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) toured AFA's choral program and had the opportunity to speak to students and conductors.

• AFA students helped to design and create and AFA Art Car that will be featured in the 2010 Art Car Parade.

• AFA Executive & Artistic Director Michael REmson serves as an administrative judge for TUTS' Tommy Tune Awards.

• AFA faculty members performed at the KUHF studios for The Front Row arts program.
