WILL NEUHAUS
After attending AFA, I realized that my time playing music had a significant impact on many of my later achievements and successes. AFA increased my musical ability and my development as a person. It helped me develop the expertise to earn a place at my first choice college and gave me the discipline needed to earn a scholarship based on my musical abilities. AFA taught me more than just how to play music — it taught me that dedication and persistence can lead to success in any area of your life.

At 14, I was terrified the first day at AFA. I didn’t know what to expect but what I ultimately found has served me throughout high school, college, medical school, and now, in my residency. What stood out for me was how quickly the expectations were to perform at a high level but without the pressures that usually come along with them. Without knowing it at the time, AFA was developing a mentality, an appreciation for the arts, and a platform for me to grow as a person. What I learned at AFA continues to influence me profoundly: responsibility on the individual level, to be ready to perform so that the whole group can succeed, respect for diversity of culture and ethnic background, and hard work with perseverance. But ultimately, it was the opportunity to live through the music and breathe its substance rather than just playing notes that has stayed with me and that I hope will influence my future in my aspiration to become a practicing physician.

Looking back on my experiences as a student, musician, and, now, as an educator, there were many times when my life could have taken a different direction. AFA was life-changing for me — it taught me how to reach for my goals and then, to surpass them in ways I couldn't have imagined. I learned what it felt like to pursue something I longed for more than anything else. The people at AFA never gave up on me and kept feeding my passion with encouragement, discipline and persistence. With their help, I was accepted into the Moores School of Music where I recently graduated with a degree in music education. Now, as a teacher, I hope that I can nurture the same kind of drive in my students that AFA did for me.
