AFA 2017 “Beyond Music” Spring Luncheon
AFA will celebrate its partnerships with The Center for Hearing and Speech, The Lighthouse of Houston, and The Monarch School and Institute at the AFA “Beyond Music” Spring Luncheon on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at The Junior League of Houston (1811 Briar Oaks Lane, 77027).
AFA is Houston’s largest nonprofit provider of music education programs for young people. In 2015-16, over 2,000 students from 198 schools were impacted through AFA programs. As a proponent of community music making, AFA has partnered with the above organizations to use music in innovative ways that support the educational, social, and rehabilitative goals each of these programs promotes.
According to AFA Executive and Artistic Director, Dr. Michael Remson: “These organizations are leaders in improving the lives of many Houstonians: The Center for Hearing and Speech teaches deaf children to listen and speak without the use of sign language; The Lighthouse of Houston is dedicated to helping blind and visually impaired people live independently; and The Monarch School and Institute offers innovative educational opportunities for children with neurological differences.”
Highlights from AFA’s Spring Luncheon include musical performances by students and clients representing all three organizations. The winner of AFA’s annual Young Artist Competition, percussionist Joshua Gilliam, a senior at Cypress Falls High School, will also perform. Proceeds from this event will support the AFA Scholarship Enrichment Fund, which gives qualified students the opportunity to attend AFA programs, regardless of their ability to pay, and underwrites the AFA In Schools initiative, placing professional musicians in schools throughout the greater Houston area. Tickets start at $150 per person. Underwriting opportunities are available.
